Watch out for carbon monoxide!

11 octobre 2026
Watch out for carbon monoxide!

Special Precautions for Vacationers

Fuel-burning appliances that produce carbon monoxide can cause poisoning if used in a poorly ventilated area or if they are not properly maintained, regardless of the setting. Even while on vacation, whether at a cabin, a fishing or hunting camp, in a trailer, or at a campground, you must take precautions.

Make sure you have a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm and check regularly to ensure it is working properly. Also, be sure to use your fuel-burning appliances correctly and maintain them properly.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you experience symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, whether or not the carbon monoxide alarm is sounding:

  • Go outside.
  • Go to a place where you can call the Quebec Poison Control Center at 1-800-463-5060.
  • If you have access to a fire department:
    • dial 9-1-1;
    • wait for a firefighter’s permission before going back inside, even for a few minutes;
    • do not use your fuel-burning appliances until they have been inspected by a qualified professional.
  • If you do not have access to a fire department: If necessary, notify a staff member at the facility.
    • do not go back inside until your fuel-burning appliances have been inspected by a qualified professional.

If you have no symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning but the alarm is sounding:

  • If you have access to a fire department:
    • Go outside;
    • Call 9-1-1;
    • wait for a firefighter’s permission before going back inside, even for a few minutes;
    • do not use your fuel-burning appliances until they have been inspected by a qualified professional.
  • If you do not have access to a fire department: If applicable, notify a staff member at the facility.
    • Open doors and windows;
    • Go outside;
    • If applicable, shut off the fuel supply to fuel-burning appliances, such as propane or natural gas tanks or gasoline-powered appliances;
    • Do not return indoors until you have had your fuel-burning appliances inspected by a qualified professional.
