    Sustainability

The City of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue officially unveiled its sustainable development community plan “Moving towards sustainability” on October 12th, 2012.

At the October 9th, 2012 meeting of the municipal council, the City of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue adopted its first Sustainable Development Plan. Surrounded by its employees and community stakeholders, the City launched the official document at a press conference held on October 12th, 2012.

The City initiated this project in 2010. The objective of the plan is to provide guidance not only to the city, but to the whole community in order to offer a guide for a sustainable future that will hopefully fulfill the community's present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. This plan will truly become the cornerstone of the city's political and administrative decisions.

Thanks to financial contributions from the Canadian government and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities under its “Green Fund”, the City was helped in its endeavour by The Natural Step, a non-profit organization. Even though several Canadian communities had worked with this organization, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue is the only city on the island of Montreal to have used The Natural Step’s framework.

In addition to calling on experts, the Municipal Council relied on citizens, representatives of social, cultural and community groups, businessmen and professionals, as well as many employees from all departments. A vision of our community’s future was born through meetings, working groups and workshops. Short and long-term objectives were identified, and actions were set in place.

    The Process

The City used The Natural Step framework to create our integrated community sustainability plan. Many municipalities across Canada, including Whistler, BC and our sister city, Wolfville, NS, have used The Natural Step to guide their communities towards a more sustainable future.
