A short historical outline...
The city of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue is located on a passageway used by the First Nations before the arrival of Europeans. At the time, the territory bore the names Tiotenactokte (Algonquin: Here are the last encampments) or Skanawetsy (Iroquois: Whitewater). These two toponyms precisely illustrate the particular geographical situation of what would become Sainte-Anne.
Starting in the late 1780s, Scottish immigrants settled in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. Simon Fraser, an important fur trader, owned a house here. In 1840-1843, the federal government built the lock. The canal plays an important role in Canada's maritime trade, providing the only access to the Great Lakes and forming part of the Montreal-Ottawa-Kingston navigable route.
The Village of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue was founded in 1878 and incorporated as a city in 1895, shortly after the Canadian Pacific Railway built a railway bridge over the canal, parallel to the Grand Trunk bridge.
In the early 20th century, the Macdonald College and John Abbott College campuses changed the village's social and urban dynamic. In 1917, the federal government built a hospital to care for veterans of the First World War. The Garden City Press, which prints technical magazines and educational documents, moved to the town in 1919, bringing a new urban vision.
In 1924, the Quebec government built the Galipeault Bridge over the Sainte-Anne Canal, linking Île Perrot to Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. In the 1960s, the buildings erected in the 19th century were demolished and replaced by others still standing today. In 1987, a pedestrian and bicycle promenade was built along the canal.
