Clarifications following the City Council’s adoption of the directive concerning Bill number 96
Following the City Council’s adoption of the directive concerning Bill number 96 (The Act respecting French, the official and common language of Québec), the city would like to make the following clarifications:
To all library users and residents, Bill 96 requires employees to address you in French when dealing with the City. However, if you confirm that you are one of these exceptions, the employee will communicate with you in English:
    • Person declared eligible to receive education in English and who has received the document Déclaration d’admissibilité à recevoir l’enseignement en anglais (Declaration of eligibility to receive education in English) from the Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec.
    • First Nations and Inuit
    • Immigrants in Québec for 6 months or less
    • Person who has corresponded solely in English with the Administration prior to May 13, 2021 in connection with a file concerning them
    • Individuals residing outside Québec
Bill 96 does not prevent us from carrying books and periodicals in English. Rest assured that the municipal library has and will always have books and periodicals in English.
